Colors for Cows' Shadow Areas

Whites in Shadow.

And sometimes a painting just flows out of the brush, like here.

In the midst of Summer, everything vibrant.

My fascination is the whites of the cow in shadow, the colors that you then see.

Is is blue, to the purple side? To the ultramarin side? To the green-blue side?
Yes, all of the above is my conclusion : )

There is no 1 conclusion. That makes it fascinating. And there is a reason they all three exist. It’s because those blues mix with the belly reflective grass & ochres that exist in the shadow, etc!

I test out various solutions (in various paintings). BUT: according to what I see. And that's also the TIP: If you 'just' paint what you SEE, you don't need 'rules'.
Sure, you can find 'rules of thumb', but don't overthink. Paint what you see.
And yes, outdoors that's easier. Because photos aren't color correct.
