Essence - Cows

Simple + Magic.

Here I was with artists in the 'in-the-field'-course, and I sketched the cows that stood close for our morning demo. Magic in the morning!

It's true: "When you create a good foreground, the background takes care of itself"
That's a quote from Hawthorne. And so true.

Also true for scenes on the beach. A great foreground figure can carry a whole painting. And vice versa, a great scene without a foreground element can feel 'empty'. It's a balance.

Of course, it's also magic 'when it works'. And do we have control over that? Perhaps not. (You didn't expect that answer I think.) The only control you can gain is to put practice in and to keep an open mind as in outcome and process.
I think a painting that turns out well is always 'a gift given to the painter' first of all.

It's good to simplify, to find 'essence'.
Something said in a simple way can have a lot of truth, or to say 'essence' or 'staying power'.

The colors were saturated yet soft in these mornings.
