Sitting down and painting the sunset.
Weaving light, water, waves, sand, you do need to indicate a bit of the waves' shadow, but often it helps to soften the darks a lot. Soften in the sense, lessen.
The figures create the darkest dark, but in the center (in the sun's direct path or backlight) they're lighter and almost turquoise. Sometimes with a hint of red. Light and its effects on color keeps to be the most fascinating of course.
